Frequently Asked Questions
What is Inclusive Access?
The Inclusive Access program is a collaboration between UVA Faculty, UVA Bookstores and top publishers to provide digital course materials to students the first day of class at the lowest cost. A faculty member chooses an adoption of all digital content for required materials which can include interactive Learning platforms. When a student enrolls in a class a charge will be billed to their SIS account under the UVA Bookstore student charge account.
How does this program benefit me?
Our partnership with publishers and faculty allow us to offer your course materials at the best price and conveniently on the first day of class. Our goal is to provide ease of access and affordability to bolster the success of our students!
Why am I automatically enrolled in this program?
All enrolled students are automatically enrolled in the program in order to have access to the required materials on the first day of class through Canvas.
How and where do I access the Inclusive Access materials?
You may access your course materials through Canvas. This will then direct you to a new browser window where you will access your materials.
How much does Inclusive Access cost?
The price varies depending upon the platform and content used by the instructor, but Inclusive Access prices are lower than the cost of purchasing access direct from the publisher, and average 50% to 70% below the cost of a new, printed text.
When and how will I be charged for the digital materials?
All students who have enrolled in courses with Inclusive Access materials will be automatically be charged to their UVA Bookstore Student Charge account within 7-10 days prior to the first day of class. This is an interest free account provided by the UVA Bookstore and you have 30 days to pay off your account from the date of the charge. A student may add or drop a class during the dates set by the University Academic Calendar. A credit will be issued to your Student Charge account within 24-48 hours. If you add a class with IA materials a charge will occur.
After the add/drop period you will no longer be allowed to receive a refund for your required materials.
Do I have to buy the loose-leaf copy?
You are not obligated to purchase the accompanying loose-leaf version to the text if you do not need it. We only offer this as an option for those students who prefer the physical book over the digital version.
How do I opt out if I dropped the class? If you have dropped an Inclusive Access class, then you do not need to worry about opting out. Only those students who remain on the class roster will have the option to opt out.
What are Interactive or Adaptive Courseware Platforms?
Interactive Courseware is much more than just an e-book. While platforms like Mastering, MindTap, Connect, and LaunchPad typically include a full digital text, they have added interactive content designed to make the reading more engaging, which increases comprehension and retention of the material and can ultimately lead to greater student success. They can include videos and interactive animations, quizzes, and homework sets which can include hints and/or links to the related text for incorrect answers, serving as a virtual tutor. They also allow for various levels of customization by the instructor, peer-to-peer sharing of notes, and the creation of digital flashcards you can use with smartphone apps.
What does it mean to opt-out?
If you wish to remain in the class, but want to purchase your materials from another source you must OPT OUT of the program before the add/drop period.
CAUTION! Some faculty require you to use the IA materials in order to pass the class. All work will be lost if you opt out.
How do I opt-out?
To opt-out of the program, you will need to access the CANVAS course site, click the UVA Bookstore/Inclusive Access tab and once directed into a new window, please click the gray bar at the bottom of the page that says “opt-out” to do so. If you do not see this, please let us know.
