Harmony Lee is a pen name for Dan Rice (he/they), who is a current student at UVA through the BIS program of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
By now, you may have happened upon the common colloquial phrase in which people sometimes claim to know something "like the back of my hand" – generally meaning quite intuitively and/or extraordinarily well. I have long been perplexed by this phenomenon as I wonder how well I truly do know the back of my own hand. Could I perhaps recall the image from memory – with each little freckle that marks an encounter with the piercing gaze of the sun, every vein which pulses with the plasma of my very survival, and several small scars that tell silent anecdotes of pain and healing at the back of another?
In this creative memoir which explores themes such as reality, sanity, innocence and identity, sophomore self-published author Harmony Lee calls into question what it really means to know something like The Back of My Hand. Spanning the timeframe of thirty years in this world and lifetime, this is a reclaiming of authorship and autonomy over a series of stories that once seemed too foreign and fateful to write or recover.
